On November 29, was published the report on the regulatory reform in the UK press.
After phone hacking scandal, where News of the World, Ruppert Murdoch´s business was involved, David Cameron, Prime Minister, decided to compose a inquiry to investigate these illegal actions. Lord Leveson was responsible to write the statement.

Lord Brian Leveson released the report of “culture, practice and ethics” of journalism.  It lasted eight months to make the report. During these months, many celebrities and politicians have testified such as J.K Rowling, Ruppert Murdoch, Nick Clegg, Hugh Grant...
The News of the World was closed following the arrest of dozens of its employees. Besides the Leveson Inquiry, The Police is conducting an investigation to journalists and authorities to exchange information, which caused numerous arrests including Murdoch´s former chief press Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks, former director of “The Sun” and “ News of the World”

Leveson is expected to propose in its recommendations a new system of regulation of the media, such as the creation of a body governed by law with greater powers that Press Complaints Commission, condemned as ineffective because it can’t prevent the damage.
Another controversial issue that took a part of Leveson Inquiry was the politician and journalist relations. It defined as too closed and disruptive, even though there was no evidence about the relationship of Ruppert Murdoch with any political party.

However, the debate continues: Should this independent regulator body exist or not? Many journalists complained about it; they argued that the press shouldn’t be regulated, according to its freedom. In this free market anyone should be able to publish anything that is accurate and reliable, as long as they didn’t break any law, such as phone hacking.

Even thought, many editors came to agreement to create this independent body. To summarize, creating or not this regulator body, journalism shouldn’t be as lucrative as it is. It should keep its code of inform, educate and entertain.

The Bank of England: New Governor

The last week of November, Mark Carney was elected as the new Governor of the Bank of England.
Known as “Old Lady” of of Threadneedle Street, the Bank of England aims for maintain monetary and financial stability and thereby contribute to the health of the British economy. The Bank of England was founded in 1694, was nationalized on March in 1946 and became an independent institution of the Government in 1997. However, were Cameron, Prime Minister, and George Osborne, Minister of Economy, who announced Mark Carney as Governor. It means that The Bank of England and The British Government still closely related.
The current governor, Mervyn King, has been in charged for ten years, but he couldn’t solve economics crisis. That is one of the reasons why he is being substituted.
It has been a great surprise Carney´s choice because for months sounded the name of Paul Tucker as favourite substitute of M. King. Although his option seemed to reduced when Mr. Trucker was associated to Libor scandal and Barclays directors. Another candidate for the position was Lord Adair turner, chairman of Financial Services Authority.
Mark Carney, aged 47, despite of being a surprise for the position, is considered one of the best economists in the world and actually, he is the current Governor of The Bank of Canada. Osborne said that Carney will bring a new perspective to the British economy. His main objective is to improve British economy and solve the crisis.
Carney has an eight years term and he will have more power than M.King.  He will have to set up the interest rates and to control the inflation. He will have more control on the financial system in order to prevent economic crisis.
According to the Government reform, The Bank of England will monitor the institutions, as a consequence to maintain financial stability.

U.S Elections

It has been the U.S election, one of the most relevant elections in the world. For that reason, all the media was focused on America the first week of November.
Nevertheless, Sandy Hurricane was in some front pages during few days. It was one of the ever worst storms that America ever had, but it did not downplay the elections.
Barack Obama, Democratic nominee, and Mitt Romney, representative of the Republican

Party were the two main challengers of this election held on November 6th. It was extremely hard to find any other parties in the election, it is called oligopoly; where small parties find impossible to get any representation.

In the election, Americans voted for the House of Representatives, Senate and the President of the United States. It was one of the tightest elections of the history. Weeks
before was hard to prognosticate the winner.

Obama became again President getting more than 300 electoral votes, although they hold the Senate for a few votes and the House of Representatives is dominated by Republicans. It means that it will be tough to make any decision due to the fact that both parties have to agree.

Stats had said that the keypoint was Ohio, whoever had won this state they would have won the election and it happened. However, none thought about the significance of the Hispanic votes. Three of four Hispanic votes were for Obama, the greatest percentage since 1996. Those votes gave Obama an advantage of 50 points ahead of Romney. It is even more relevant were 17% of the population is Hispanic.

Immigration and health care were two great issues in this election, the ultraconservative position that Republicans were, made them two lose many votes in the Hispanic population. In the other hand, Obama targeted his votes in a coalition of women, Hispanic, Afro-Americans and the youngest sector. It was shocking when Romney figured out that this coalition, that Obama was targeting for, won the typical American vote.( White aged and rural electorate)

Immigration´s reform and homosexual marriage were on Obama´s agenda. Mitt Romney and his conservative programme were really inflexible about those issues. However Republicans might want to change their agenda before the next election. It seems that U.S is turning into a fresh country where the immigration, in less than 25 years, will exceed 50% of the total population.

Would these stats modify future political decisions ?
